Beegu

We have started learning about the story of Beegu.  She is an alien that has crash landed on Earth who is looking for some friends or a way to get home.  Here we are acting out some of the scenes from the middle of the story.

Beegu was not wanted by the grown ups.

Throwing in PE

We have been learning how to throw and catch in PE.  We have been practising with big basketballs and tiny tennis balls.  Here we are having a go!

Homework due Friday 2nd February

Our spellings are the days of the week, as from next week we are going to start having a go at writing the long date in our books.  Please make sure that you don’t forget your capital letters for all the days of the week!

Spellings this week are therefore:

This week, have a go at completing these number lines using your 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

100, 90, 80… Can you carry on to 0?

45, 40, 35… Can you carry on to 0?

8, 10, 12… Can you carry on to 20?

It was lovely to see so many of your homemade rulers and super sentences this week.  Thank you to everyone who had a go and keep up the hard work Year 1!

How do you measure up?

We have been learning about measurement in Maths.  We have been thinking about all the different ways we can measure things (comparing, using handspans or using rulers and metre rules).  We have been measuring things all around the classroom to see which is the longest and which is the shortest – we have been having lots of fun in Maths this week!

Materials

We have been learning all about materials and their properties in Science, and we have been reading The Jolly Postman in English.  We have therefore been thinking about what materials would be best for making a hat to keep the post man dry or a jacket that is comfortable.  Do you think tin foil is the best material for a hat? Or paper for a jacket?

Homework due Friday 26th January

We have been so impressed with how well Year 1 have been doing with their spellings and number work.  Keep it up the hard work!

Next week, we will be learning about the ‘a’ in Phonics and how it can make two different sounds.  For example, in fat it makes the short ‘a’ sound and in fast it makes the long ‘a’ sound.

Spellings this week are therefore:

Short ‘a’ sound: fat, cat, pan, hand, man

Long ‘a’ sound: fast, path, pass, last, mast

Can you put them into sentences once you have learnt them?

Number work:

We are starting measurement in Maths next week, and we will be comparing different objects to see which is bigger and which is smaller.  Can you make yourself a ruler we can use for measuring by writing your numbers from 0-20, making sure all your numbers are the right way round.

Have fun!

Weaving

In Art in Year 1 we have been practising weaving.  We thought about the different patterns we could make out of colours and then wove the pieces of paper in and out.  It was quite tricky but we tried really hard and we were very proud of our work.  Here we are having a go!
