Hedgehog class can tell you the features of 3D shapes!

We worked together to group 3D shapes and explained why we have grouped them that way according to their features.

Shapes in Squirrel class

We have started learning about 2D and 3D shapes in Maths this week. We know that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are fat! We also learnt some exciting new words like ‘vertex’ and ‘edge’ to describe our 3D shapes. Here we are making towers with our 3D shapes and creating pictures using 2D shapes.

Happy half term!

A big well done to everyone in Year 1 for their hard work this half term!  There are no spellings over the break but please make sure you are reading every day.  There are also sounds and tricky words at the front of your reading diaries that you can practise.

We are going to be looking at shapes in Maths next term.  Can you do a shape hunt at home or when you are out and see how many 2D and 3D shapes you can see? For example, a window is a rectangle.

The Year 1 Team

Superstar Squirrels

Today in Maths we used all our knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve a problem. We had a triangle with number at each corner and we had to work out the missing number if every side added up to 10.  We were so proud of ourselves for having a go and working it out!

It looked liked this:

We either added up all the parts to make the whole, which was 10 (like this):

Or we started with our whole, which was 10, and subtracted the two parts to be left with the missing part (like this):

Hedgehogs play sodoku!

In maths this week we have been learning addition and subtraction facts.

We learnt how to solve problems and use the inverse to complete equations.

Today we worked with our learning partner to play sodoku where we had to find the missing number in the line to make 10.Some of us found it a little challenging but eventually worked together and Miss Shakes was super proud of us! 👍

Keep practising your number bonds over the half term!
